In many areas, construction doesn’t stop for colder temps, rain, wind, or snow. Luckily, workwear manufacturers are ready with under layers, outer layers, boots, gloves, and other gear designed specifically for contractors.
Here are eight winter products to help keep you warm and dry.
1. Duluth Trading Co.
Part of Duluth’s Alaskan Hardgear collection, this Merino wool base layer shirt is soft, breathable, wicking, and temperature regulating. The odor-fighting shirt includes 4 percent resilient elastane to keep it stretchy but not lose shape. The shirt is machine-washable.
2. Ergodyne
Part of the Foul Weather Gear Series, the GloWear 8388 Type R Class 3/2 Thermal Jacket Kit combines the company’s 8386 Class 3 Outer Shell Jacket and the 8287 Convertible Thermal Jacket into a four-in-one high-visibility jacket system. It features a 300 denier Oxford polyester outer shell with breathable coating, inner jacket with Thinsulate lining, inset hood, and 2-inch ANSI-compliant 3M Scotchlite Reflective. The inner jacket zips out and the sleeves zip off to create a Class 2 thermal vest. Storage includes two external front pockets, external zipper chest pocket, cellphone pocket, clear ID badge holder, and radio clip tabs.
3. Milwaukee Tool
The No Days Off hooded sweatshirt combines wind and water resistance with comfort for an ideal layering piece. It features a fleece lining, fitted hood designed to be worn under a hard hat, extended collar to protect the neck, and interior storm flap for additional protection. Durable polyester construction and double-layer pocket reinforcement are designed to withstand jobsite rigors.
4. Blaklader
Made with 100 percent Merino wool and featuring a warm lining on the sides and back, this long underwear is ideal for temps from 23 to -22 degrees F. Features include an elastic waistline, a cuffed trouser bottom, and contrasting-color seams.
5. Carhartt
The company’s Chore Coat offers water-repellent, wind-resistant cotton duck construction, warm poly-fleece lining, a Sherpa-trimmed collar with snaps for an optional hood, and a drop-tail hem for added coverage. Full Swing details designed for the jobsite include stretch panels on the back and at the elbows for easy lifting, hauling, or climbing.
6. Ironclad
Providing warmth and comfort without sacrificing dexterity, Cold Condition gloves feature a windproof/water-repellant membrane and a microfleece liner. Duraclad reinforcements are eight times more durable than leather, the company says, while TPR knuckle protection helps prevent impact and abrasion and the TPR Cuff Puller provides for faster positioning.
7. Dickies
Flex work pants with Lycra Tough Max technology are two times stronger and longer lasting than standard work pants, and offer increased flexibility for stretching, lifting, and bending. The pants are available in denim, duck, and twill in five-pocket and carpenter styles.
8. Carolina Shoe
The 8-inch general purpose work boot features a leather upper, steel safety toe cap, and steel shank. Weather-resistant details include a waterproof ScubaLiner and 400 grams of Thinsulate insulation. The boots are electrical hazard rated.
