A Chicago House With Unusual Exterior Brick Work

The Lipton Thayer House is an elegant new architectural addition to its Evanston, Ill., neighborhood, but one of the most visible features of the project is the 21-foot-tall moiré-patterned façade that lines the single-family residence.

Designed by Hawthorne, Calif.–based Brooks + Scarpa, which partnered with Chicago-based Studio Dwell Architects, the project is located in a metro area where brick has a long history. “We’re in Chicago; we need to do brick,” Lawrence Scarpa has said about the project.

Holding a prominent stance on the street, the screen is made from bricks that form torqued columns that elegantly spiral into the air.
