Watch the Samurai Carpenter Renovate His Home Into an Outdoor Retreat

Wooden-framed glass railing system and new cedar shake bring old house new life

Jesse de Geest, founder of the Samurai Carpenter, renovated his old home with a new roof, cladding, and a second-story patio with a wooden-framed glass railing system.

“I’m going to redo it all with a whitewash board and batten, a little bit of cedar shake, white trim. Kind of spruce up the house to kind of make it look a little west coast modern, samurai style,” de Geest says in the video highlights. “It’s going to be amazeballs.”

In addition to renovating the cladding of the house, his team also reshaped the brick patio and added a modern wooden awning above the new elevated patio. WIth the addition of modern, exterior furniture, the space transformed into an outdoor entertainment area.

“It’s amazing what you can accomplish with just a lot of beast-mode action, a gas axe, tamper, and your bare hands,” de Geest says as he rips up the old outdoor landscaping.

In other news, you can see that I ripped the side of my house off. Oops. Actually Justin ripped the wall off—no way I was going to do all that labor.

I’m going to redo it all with a whitewash board and batten, a little bit of cedar shake, white trim, kind of spruce up the house to kind of make it look a little west coast modern, samurai style. It’s going to be amazeballs.

When hard work pays off

Woo-wee, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish with just a lot of bestrode action, a gas axe, tamper, and your bare hands.

Part of me gets really excited when I hit a milestone like this and part of me gets really depressed because you can see how much work you have left to go, but you just have to keep plugging away.

One day I will finish this renovation, and when I do, the video is going to be epic.

There’s just so much work left to do, but one day at a time, we just keep pushing forward.

Support and community

You guys are the absolute best audience anyone could ever ask for. It’s absolutely mind boggling how awesome you guys are. And supporting a brother when he’s feeling down. The support, the emails, the messages, so I just want to say thank you to all you guys

Dare I say it, it’s actually going to look good when I’m done with it. It’s so crazy, it was such a [mess] when I bought the place.

Yes! I’m so glad to be done with that project. Oh my gosh, that was a lot of work.
