At the 30th edition of the Euroluce earlier this year, extra large pendants, adjustable fixtures, and lighting that doubles as art dominated the show.

Perhaps the most important event for contemporary lighting, Euroluce draws huge numbers of designers, architects, lighting showrooms, and other industry insiders who flock to Milan to catch a preview of what’s next in the industry.

The event is presented every two years at the hugely influential Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the annual global design exhibition that draws almost 400,000 attendees from 188 nations. Salone celebrated its 58th anniversary this year.

“Euroluce runs every two years since 1976 and presents the most innovative solutions in the field of light for interiors and exteriors,” the show’s organizers say. “With more than 420 of the best exhibitors in the sector, half of which are foreign, the International Lighting Exhibition—at its 30th edition—is recognised as the global benchmark lighting exhibition, where technological innovation and design culture take centre stage.”

Emerging this week are several pivotal lighting trends that designers and manufacturers say will be huge in the coming year. One of these is scale—make that large scale. Many brands, including Flos, Artemide, Louis Poulsen, Hudson Furniture New York, and Marset, introduced overscaled ceiling and wall sconces that are intended for large spaces, great rooms, or high-ceiling homes. This upscaling of lighting follows in the footsteps of other products in the home that have recently increased in size, including patio doors, wndows, and tiles.

Meanwhile, other manufacturers took a different approach toward the same goal. Instead of one large pendant or chandelier, some brands introduced modular programs where smaller pendants can be grouped and presented based on the size of the project.

Another trend that stood out at the show was lighting that can be adjusted up or down or configured to meet the needs of the space. New programs from Atemide and Flos allow designers to add elements, choose sizes, or field-adjust products based on the needs of the room or project.

Sculptural lighting that doubles as art was heavily represented at the show as well. The most extreme case of this movment was Arturo Alvarez’s Artwork Series. “Arturo Alvarez embarks on a new artistic period using light as a guiding thread, with a new language,” the brand says. “It delves into a deep exploration of the human being and its relationships and ways of communication. Listening to other person, the importance of conversations, solitude and the irruption of technology make their way into his artistic work resulting in different reflections.”
