At the 2023 International Builders' Show, thousands of profesionals came together to explore and discuss the latest trends and products in residential construction. Among those professionals was green home builder and remodeler Nicole Tysvaer, CEO of Symbi Homes, who joined Pro Remodeler, our sister publication, to check out some of the many stand-out energy efficient products at this year's show.
Among the products Tysvaer highlighted was CertainTeed's newly designed solar shingles. According to CertainTeed, the shingles have a power rating of 70 watts per shingle and are easy to install. Its website reads: "No need to find rafters or flash penetrations in the roofing system. Solar shingles are installed directly into the roof sheathing using standard deck screws. Fastening points are covered by subsequent solar shingles, the same way that asphalt shingles are installed."
"It integrates right into their asphalt shingle system," said Tysvaer. "It looks very sleek, very cool."

Tysvaer also shined a spotlight on the John Mansville Corbond IV product, a Greenguard Gold-certified closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation. According to John Mansville, the product includes HFO technology that allows it to be "produced with a low Global Wamring Potential and an Ozone Depletion Level of zero."
"A high quality spray foam insulation can be so beneficial if you're trying to tighten up your house," Tysvaer said.

On the topic of a tighter building envelope (and cleaner indoor air quality, which was a hot topic throughout the show), Tysvaer additionally touched on ventilation and dehumidification by way of AprilAire. The manufacturer introduced a number of new products this year, including its UVC, an ultraviolet light that claims to kill 99.9% of mold on A coils.
"As we're tightening up our homes, we have to think a lot about ventilation and dehumidification, and sometimes, humidification and doing all that mechanically" Tysvaer says. "AprilAire is leading the way with so many cool products right now."
