Mosa Debuts New Tile Line That Interacts with Space and Time

Tile manufacturer Mosa has developed a new line of dynamic ceramic tiles that adds a fourth dimension to flooring—time. The μ (mu) tiles interact with space and time, changing appearance based on their surroundings and the time of day.

“Inspired by the extraordinary relationship between light and the color spectrum, Mosa’s designers looked at nature, art, and trends in architecture, as well as ancient Greek philosophers’ visions on [color and design],” says Mosa, a Cradle to Cradle Certified tile manufacturer based in the Netherlands.

The tile company’s designers created a unique blend of different tinted ceramic grains mixed with clay. The pigments absorb some colors and reflect others, causing the tiles to subtly shift shades as lighting changes. As a result, the flooring appears lighter in daylight and darker at night.

The tiles are also affected by the size, shape, and colors of the room they are in. They reflect the color of the furniture and walls around them, making them appear different in each room where they are installed. The series comes in only one size—24 by 24 inches—but is offered in four different base shades: white, light gray, gray, and brown.

“Playful, inspirational, and full of surprises, Mosa μ will redefine your perception of space and time,” the company says.
