New Moen Smart Water Detector Identifies Leaks Anywhere in Home

Flo by Moen Smart Water Detector

Moen and partner Flo Technologies have added a new Smart Water Detector that monitors water lines for leaks to their Flo by Moen smart home water security system.

Device can work independently or pair with other Flo by Moen products

Moen and partner Flo Technologies have added a new Smart Water Detector that monitors water lines for leaks to their Flo by Moen smart home water security system.

“From your toilet, shower or faucet, to the pipes in your foundation and behind your walls, the smart water security system monitors all of them so there’s no surprises on your water bill or catastrophes when you come home from vacation,” the company says.

Using 3½-half inch smart sensors, the Smart Water Detector can monitor areas in the house that are prone to leaks, such as a bathroom or laundry room. If the device senses freezing temperatures, high humidity, or a leak in the home, it will immediately alert the homeowner via notifications on the Flo by Moen app in real time, according to the company. The users can then get a head of any possible damage by knowing when a leak starts and its approximate location. Think fire alarm, but for water leaks.

With the app, users can monitor multiple locations at a time. This means someone can check on a rental property or vacation home from thousands of miles away at their permanent residency. Users can also turn the water on or off on the app if they have the Smart Water Detector paired with the Smart Water Shutoff, a separate device that uses three sensors for flow, pressure, and temperature to automatically shut off a home’s water if a major leak is detected.

The Smart Water Shutoff is installed on the main water supply line and can detect leaks as small as one drop per minute. The device runs a daily health test to check for microleaks while also constantly monitoring regular water use 24 hours a day. These updates are available through the app.

By pairing the Smart Water Detector with the Smart Water Shutoff, users can monitor anywhere in the home that may be prone to leaks with the individual detectors and turn off the main water line with the shutoff device, according to the company. Both technologies can act independently of each other, but when used conjointly, they form a water security system that allows users to instantly act.

“The addition of the Smart Water Detector was a natural extension of the Flo by Moen system to allow homeowners to further enhance the control they have over their home’s water,” said Michael Poloha, group manager, IoT, Moen. “The Smart Water Shutoff offers a completely preventative approach to leak detection, and now the Smart Water Detector can sense and notify users of water events that happen outside of the pipes - like a flooding basement or a malfunctioning appliance - to help reduce the risk of water damage and provide full home protection.”

Through the app, users can choose the sensitivity of the automatic shut off for greater control over their water systems. The company says that the app uses Flo 2.0, “an enhanced machine learning technology that uses AI and user feedback to better customize protection for each home.” Users can position a sensitivity sliding bar on the app or set their own parameters.
