When Joel Contreras designs new homes and remodels, the layout almost always revolves around the kitchen. And nearly as often, that kitchen exudes a contemporary vibe. This includes the crisp edges and clean lines of a Carrara marble countertop with a waterfall edge or unfussy backsplashes in classic subway tile. “I love contrast,” notes Contreras, designer and project manager for Contramark Kitchens. “I love having white on black or white on charcoal.” The designer balances the cooler tones with woods and warmer metallics; lately, he’s been drawn to American walnut for its clean, consistent grain.
