Italian lighting and furniture brand Poltrona Frau has brought its new Soffi lighting collection to the U.S. architecture and design community.
Designed by the design firm GamFratesi in Copenhagen, Denmark, the new chandelier consists of nine blown-glass, hanging-light fittings and is ideal for spaces with high ceilings such as entrances and dining rooms.
“Though designed to light up the things that surround them, all Poltrona Frau lamps have their own understated but distinct personality that makes them easy on the eye, even when off,” the company says. “Produced with top quality finishes and in fine materials like mouth-blown glass, the perfect combination of design and artisanship, Poltrona Frau lighting are more like little works of art. Soffi showcases the purity of light and glass blown by skilful Venetian artisans.”

Poltrona says GamFratesi’s minimalist design for Soffi captures the exact moment in which the blowing technique gives the glass its form. Delicate and irregular globes seem to emerge from a slim saddle-leather strap, suspended in space by gravity, the company says.
Soffi is one of three special collaborations between GamFratesi and Poltrona Frau, the company says. Stine Gam, a Danish architect with a master in furniture design united with Enrico Fratesi, an Italian architect. “Together, from their studio based in Copenhagen and their dual traditional background, the pair’s design takes its creative drive from a fusion of tradition and renewal and an experimental approach to their chosen materials and techniques.”
Inspired by an ancient art translated into a simple yet contemporary language, the Soffi lamps consist of two elements, both in blown glass, the company explains. “The outer globe, ethereal and almost weightless, is in faded milk white or smoky grey tones,” Poltrona continues. “Inside, the light fitting, in matte white blown glass with a pearl finish, is visibly more solid. The light produced by the lamp is evenly diffused and exalts the faded colour of the external glass and its gradual transparency. It creates a magical and harmonious effect, perfect in various settings, made even more evocative by the unique nature of every lamp.”

The collection includes three distinct lamp sizes--small, medium and large--which can be combined in different configurations such as linear compositions with three globes, grouped compositions or hanging arrangements featuring three or five globes. The new chandelier composition consists of two concentric rings of different diameters, covered in Saddle Extra leather, which accommodate nine, medium-sized lights, six on the larger circle and three on the smaller inner circle.
Poltrona says the blowing process of body-tinted glass produces different nuances and irregularities in the shape of the light. Holding everything together, the Cuoio Saddle Extra leather strap is available in two finishes, Camel or Taupe, with contrasting stitching and dyed tone-on-tone raw-edge seams. A saddle-leather loop conceals the joint of the strap, which also displays the Poltrona Frau logo branded on the strap. The metal detailing found on each lamp features a natural brass finish, while white-painted steel rosettes secure the adjustable transparent cables to the ceiling.
