Zahira Cury, founder of D.singers, shares her top five tips for creating a classic contemporary kitchen that is beautiful and livable.
In order to create a contemporary look, Cury, an architect and interior designer, recommends focusing on colors, textures, and lighting that are clean and minimalistic. Using white, black, and grey to make a monochromatic color scheme makes it easier to achieve a cohesive look that ties all the design elements in the room together, from the kitchen island, a contemporary darling, to custom cabinetry that fits a client’s needs.

Playing with lighting and texture breathes life into an otherwise simplistic design, and Cury says not to be afraid to mix textures. Including textured surfaces on cabinets, floors, and walls makes the space more dynamic. For example, she recommends a dramatic, black matte lighting piece that can act as a piece of art while also offering greater contrast to the classic white of a contemporary kitchen. Matte finishes on other elements such as the backsplash, countertop, or floor are also practical: They smudge less than high-gloss, according to Cury.

I’m Zahira Cury architect and interior designer founder of d.signers. I was getting inspired at work today with my documents and recordings that I took of kitchen designs at the interior design fairs this year, and I just realized that I didn’t share those tips and trends about contemporary kitchen. So in this video I will share with you some ideas and the latest favorites for a contemporary kitchen design that I think are very unique and elegant. If you've been following me for a while, I’m sure you have heard me saying that the contemporary design is clean and minimalist.

To achieve this effect, contemporary kitchen cabinets generally have minimal ornamentation and simple but stylish hardware and no other decorative accents. In terms of colors, contemporary kitchen cabinets may often have a monochromatic color scheme. Blacks, white and grays are popular in this style. These colors give the clean appearance which characterize the contemporary style. This clean appearance and minimal details are perfect to be used when the kitchen shares the space with other areas like your living or dining room. This way the simplicity of the cabinetry can match better with all the contemporary decor and furniture that conform the space. It’s important to have multiple storage spaces to maintain the kitchen clean. It’s incredible the many choices that are available in the market! And also, It’s true that open shelving is a favorite element at the time of designing a contemporary kitchen, but now they are specially for displaying the personality of the homeowner, you can include beautiful and stylish pieces of your dining room, your kitchen books or other accessories that you usually use in your kitchen but at the same time can be used as decorative pieces.
Islands are a crucial element when it comes to contemporary kitchens. Islands tend to become the gathering spot in the kitchen and, especially if there is seating, it can also be a spot where kids can do their homework while their parents are cooking. it can help keep the family engaged and connected so its very important to make your island work properly for your needs! Look around and figure out exactly what your kitchen needs! Maybe you need additional storage space, or a place to have breakfast, or share with your guests while you’re cooking dinner, just make your kitchen island complement and complete your kitchen, maintaining functionality and visual harmony with your entire home. The idea of an open concept kitchen is very common in modern and contemporary homes so we are seeing a tendency of kitchen islands extending into living room spaces in homes. This ensures the kitchen island can be multi-functional and it will be a part of the whole composition of the space, so we need to accessories it as well. The use of stool and pendant lamps are a must have to define the area and to add character to the open space. If your kitchen shares the space with the dining or living room, remember to select pieces that speak to one another across the room. Maybe the color of your stool speak to the color of a pillow or wall art in your living room: this will create a visual flow and will provide a cohesive atmosphere. The kitchen fixtures aren’t only a functional element any more, now they are artistic pieces and crucial elements to define your kitchen style. this kind of unique accessories add character to the space and are perfect to complement a contemporary color palette in a very very chic way. Let’s try some combinations: If you have a white kitchen with a clean and contemporary appearance, try to incorporate black matte fixtures to make a high contrast and accentuate those elements. if you have wooden finishes with concrete tiles and black matte textured combinations, you can add golden matte fixtures and details to make it pop. So be creative and don’t forget to add a bold fixture to complete your contemporary home design.

When embarking on a contemporary kitchen design, consider the use of textured materials in combination with smooth and polished finishes. Textures are applied to cabinet doors, worktops, walls and flooring. By introducing textural finishes the sensory experience, both visual and tactile is enhanced in a contemporary kitchen. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures, the combination of textures in contemporary kitchens are bold and dramatic, for example: wooden floor tiles with a marble countertop. Concrete, matte cabinets, wood and gold together! Include in your kitchen lots of materials with textures because they are tactile elements that will give any kitchen a bit of warmth and history. Matte finishes are a popular favorite for using in all the areas of a contemporary home and even more in bathrooms and kitchens, this sleek finish is used in tiles, fixtures, accessories, countertop or backsplash. The matte finish is smooth to the touch and creates a soft feel for a subtle and natural appearance. Since high-gloss finishes are the quickest to show stains or scratches, matte finishes became popular because it's not necessary to clean their cabinet surfaces as often. For larger kitchens or open floor plans, matte finishes are ideal because they interact better with the the decor elements and furniture of a contemporary home. Remember that in an open space concept the different areas should speak to one another to create a cohesive space Also matte finishes are perfect to create a natural or rustic look and are perfect for combining with wooden textures. this combination is very used in contemporary homes because it provides a warm sensation needed in any home. Matte finishes produce a stunning, sleek look that adds a level of sophistication, authenticity and modernity to the space.
