Energy-Efficient Features Among Top Trends in Annual NAHB Survey

In-demand home trends from NAHB

NAHB released the results of its latest new-home trends survey, and the list of in-demand features indicates that energy-efficiency remains top of mind with buyers.

The nationwide study surveyed new-home builders about the products and design elements most likely to be found in their typical single-family homes in 2016. Low-E windows (#4), Energy Star-rated appliances (#5), and programmable thermostats (#6) made the list of most-likely features, followed by Energy Star-rated windows (#10). The findings reflect an ongoing trend toward “practical sustainability”—green features that demonstrate a return on investment and measurable monetary savings, the association says.

Energy efficiency wasn’t the only ongoing trend. Walk-in closets, laundry rooms, and great rooms topped the list of most-likely features. Also expected to be in demand are 9-foot first-floor ceilings, a central kitchen island, and granite kitchen countertops.

The move toward 9-foot ceilings reflects a shift away from two-story family rooms and two-story foyers, both of which landed on the survey’s list of least-likely features as consumers gravitate toward designs that are more efficient in both space and energy use. Other previously trendy elements that have fallen to the bottom are outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, and media rooms. Main-level cork flooring, pet-washing stations, laminate kitchen countertops, and sunrooms round out the least-likely list.
